March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!
In 1987, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed March to be “Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.” Since then, every March has been dedicated to encouraging Americans to focus on peoples’ abilities and similarities rather than differences, and to welcome people with developmental disabilities into their communities. People with developmental disabilities can be friends, neighbors, co-workers, volunteers, teammates, or classmates.
The 2015 theme for DD Awareness Month reflects this spirit – “Can Do, Like You!” Many new opportunities are emerging in this spirit throughout the state, including community-based employment options and residential opportunities that more fully integrate people with disabilities.
During Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, UCP of Greater Cleveland encourages everyone to recognize abilities and see that everyone has something to contribute to the community.
