How the Bellows Fund Helps to Improve our Clients’ Quality of Life

This week’s blog was written by David Modic, Assistive Technology Practitioner (ATP)/ IT Administrator. David assists UCP of Greater Cleveland clients in obtaining assistive technology through a grant from the Bellows Fund.

The Bellows Fund, managed by UCP National, is an important item in the UCP universe as it helps clients who might not normally be able to purchase adaptive equipment on their own.  Some items can be prohibitively expensive and/or not covered by insurance or similar third-parties; as a result, the Bellows fund can make a big difference in the quality of life of individuals.  Tablets and their accoutrements are such examples.  Thanks to the generosity of the Bellows Fund, individuals who need adaptive technology have a means to acquire it.

 

Tyrone

Tyrone recently acquired a smart phone but had no practical way of using it independently and without additional physical assistance.  He was reliant on staff to either hold it for him or to find a table on which to lay it.  The Bellows Fund was able to purchase a cradle and mount for his smart phone; Tyrone may now use his phone for music listening or placing or receiving calls without relying on someone else, thereby promoting his independence.

 

 

Mike

Mike began using Dragon Naturally Speaking a year ago and wanted to be able to practice on his own whenever he wanted.  The Bellows grant was able to purchase a robust laptop, headset and Dragon Naturally Speaking software for him.  Mike has now been able to dramatically increase his fluency in Dragon Naturally Speaking and uses this daily to exercise his writing abilities through his daily journal.

 

Marquisha

Marquisha received a new iPad and case through the Bellows Fund.  She uses it to communicate with other clients and staff via communication apps on her device.  Having such a device allows her to interact with other clients and staff in a more efficient way and also gives Marquisha the flexibility to send emails and interact with friends and family online.
