The History of Team UCP
It all started with one evening and a handful of families – and it has grown beyond anyone’s expectations. In 2007, Dick Hoyt came to speak to UCP families about his experience including his son Rick in Ironman triathlons and marathons. I was not there, but I still hear today about how he talked of inclusion and bonding with his son in this very unique way. He inspired everyone.
In response to this, nine UCP families joined together to form Team UCP, a network of people completing the 2008 Cleveland Triathlon while raising funds for UCP of Greater Cleveland. The rest, as they say, is history. We went from 65 racers that first year to over 350 participants just a few short years later! Those nine families turned into close to 20 – and they brought friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors and anyone else who was ready, willing and able! Those who could not race joined close to 200 others to volunteer on the race course and at the finish line. UCP employees joined the team by racing, volunteering and cheering the families on during the race and at the finish line.
Team UCP became electric. It can consume the summers with family fundraising events, the daily count of increasing donations and a spirit that is unmatched. Everything culminates with the emotional race day where families cross the finish line with their children with special needs after biking and running (and some swimming!) in tow. There are many tears during the event, and many children even walk across the finish line.
Team UCP is a spectacular example of what it means to work together towards a common goal. Throughout the past eight years, over $1.3 million has been raised to support programming of UCP of Greater Cleveland! What a testament to the hard work of Team UCP members. They are a committed and dedicated group who never give up or give in when they set their mind on a goal. I have been in awe of and humbled by Team UCP. It has been my privilege to be a part of it.
Please join us on Sunday, July 31st when Team UCP will once again descend upon the Cleveland Triathlon. There is nothing like it.
